City life

Bruce Farthing was elected to the Court of Common Council of the Corporation of London representing the Ward of Aldgate (the shipping ward) in 1981 and served on a variety of committees, notably the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and was, for a time, chairman of the Board of Governers of the City of London school. He consistently endeavoured to raise awareness of the importance of maritime affairs in the city and setup Maritime London recently to promote it as a shipping centre. He was a Freeman of the City and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights.

Shipping Industry

Bruce Farthing occupied a number of senior positions including Secretary General of the Council of European and Japanese National Shipowners Associations (CENSA) 1967-76; Rapporteur Sea Transport Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (1976-96); and Director of the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) 1983-99. His book Farthing on International Shipping was first published in 1987 and is now in its third edition.

Early life

Educated at Cambridge, he was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1954 and was in government legal service until joining the Chamber of Shipping as a legal advisor in 1959. He married in the same year, and had 2 children, Anne & Richard. He remarried in 1986.

A life in pictures

21 April 2008

On the first anniversary of Bruce Farthing's passing, I compiled a "life in pictures". A number of pictures relate to the eulogies in the "Listen again" section. Click here to view.

Service of Thanksgiving

5 July 2007

About two hundred and fifty people came to a Service of Thanksgiving, held at St Lawrence Jewry in the City of London last week. Afterwards, there was a reception in the Guildhall Club close by. There was a retiring collection split 50/50 between the Mission to Seafarers and the Shipwrights' Ark Appeal which totalled £1093. Thank you to everyone for coming, for your donations, and for all your kind wishes.

Eulogies

Since the service, a number of people have asked for transcripts of the eulogies. Available on the left are mine, and in the Aldgate Ward newsletter, the text of one by former Lord Mayor and chairman of LLoyds Lord Levene, together with a recording of his speech.

Listen again

I recorded the eulogies at the pulpit. For those of you who were unable to make it to the service, or wish to listen to these moving tributes again, each recording can be downloaded by clicking on the relevant link on the left. These are MP3 files (approx 5M each).

Video

There is a 2 minute excerpt from the 1998 Intercargo video in which he explains the importance of shipping to the World. Click here to view (approx 15M).
